If you are a Microsoft Windows faithful like me and you use your PC a lot, either for work or otherwise, you probably have come to love the cool feature called Sticky Notes, which has been part of Windows since the Vista days. With the migration to Windows 10 (which is even more awesome!), you may have been wondering how to move your very useful sticky notes from Windows 7 to your new Windows 10 PC.
Sticky Notes is a very useful feature in Windows 7. For users who work on multiple computers, importing and exporting the notes can be very helpful. These directions will show how to do it. If you love Sticky Notes, this tech-recipe will show you how to easily share them between multiple computers. On first computer: 1. You can pin Sticky Notes to the Windows taskbar to create a new note quickly. Right-click the Sticky Notes icon in the taskbar, and then click Pin to taskbar. Next, if you right click or tap and hold on the Sticky Notes icon in the Windows taskbar, you can select New note.
Wonder no more. Below I will show you exactly how to do the migration in a smooth way and you will have your old Sticky notes on to your new Windows 10 PC in no time.
Pre-requisites
- With Sticky Notes, you can create notes, type, ink or add a picture, add text formatting, stick them to the desktop, move them around there freely, close them to the Notes list, and sync them across devices and apps like OneNote Mobile, Microsoft Launcher for Android, and Outlook for Windows.
- You can also copy this file to another PC running Windows 7 to view your notes there. How do I Save My Notes for Later? If you’d like to close Sticky Notes but not lose your current notes (i.e. Avoid clicking the X to delete a note), you’ll need to do the following: Right click the Sticky Notes icon in the taskbar and click Close.
Before you begin, do the following:
If this is part of an operation to upgrade your PC to Windows 10:
- On your Windows 7 PC, navigate to the folder C:UsersUsernameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftSticky Notes, where Username is the name you use for login. Copy the file called StickyNotes.snt to a USB stick or any other backup location.
- Note: the AppData folder may be hidden on your PC. To find it, simply go to you Startmenu and type in %appdata% , then press Enter. You will be led straight to the location C:UsersUsernameAppDataRoaming.
VERY IMPORTANT: On your Windows 10 PC, Reset the Sticky Notes application to factory settings, otherwise the import process will not work.
- Go to your Start menu and open Settings. On the Settings window, click on Apps. The Apps & Features window will open. Scroll down and click on Sticky Notes. You should see the following window open. Click on Reset:
Import Your Sticky Notes to Windows 10
After resetting the Sticky Notes application, DO NOT open it until after the importation process is completed, otherwise you will have to do the reset process again before proceeding.
If you are sure your application is reset and you did not open it, then you are now ready to do the importation.
On Windows 10, Microsoft have changed the location and format for storing sticky notes. They now store them in a data file called plum.sqlite. Here is what you should do:

- Open file explorer, paste in the location %LocalAppData%PackagesMicrosoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalState exactly as stated here, then press Enter. You will be directed to the location C:UsersejefnkaAppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalState.
- In the folder LocalState, create a folder called Legacy.
- You remember your file StickyNotes.snt containing your backed up sticky notes? Paste it into your newly created Legacy folder and rename it as ThresholdNotes.snt. Here is how it should look for you now with your StickyNotes.snt file correctly renamed to ThresholdNotes.snt. The red spot will have your Username:
Finally, if you followed the above steps correctly, simply open your Sticky Notes application on Windows 10 and it should right away populate with your old sticky notes data. Bravo!

Recover Sticky Notes Windows 10
Windows has a feature that a lot of people may not use often called Sticky Notes. As the name implies, Sticky Notes can be used as quick post-it reminders where users could put them on a table or on a refrigerator to remind them of things.Windows by default puts sticky notes on the Desktop. They have been around since Windows 7 and are offered in Windows 7, 8/8.1 and 10. Not sure if they were in other versions.
Coordinating with Sticky Notes, is the Windows Snipping Tool, which allows users to crop off any image of the screen from a screenshot and you can save the image, and/or print it.Save Sticky Notes In Windows 7
- Do a search for Sticky Notes in your computer's search box if you don't see Sticky Notes in your Start Menu.
- Open the note and write something. You can enlarge the note by moving the sliders like any other Window to write more content. The note is now on your desktop. If you add new notes by clicking the + sign, the new note stays next to the old note, it is not deleted unless you click on the X for each note and answer yes to deleting the note in the confirmation message.
- Search for Windows Snipping Tool in your Search box again.
- Find the snipping tool and open it.
- You have several options for snipping, for this example, click on the arrow next to New and select 'Window Snap.'
- Next, just go your Sticky Notes you want to snip away the background. Just touch the any area where the perimeter of the window would be located. Note that had we used the default Rectangular Snip, we would have to draw a box around the area, and that can be a problem for some people.
- You can save the Snip to a location on your computer as an HTML. PNG, or JPEG file.
- After saving the snip, you can go to the file, open it up and print the note using your conventional printer software, or the tools in Windows.
- Once printed, you can cut down the size of the page for conveyance. This will make the use of Sticky Notes more useful. Hope this helps!
